How to Review Your Life: A Simple Practice for Personal Growth

Do you review your life on a regular basis?

Like, take an inventory of what is good and what could be better?

It’s something I highly recommend. I started practicing reviewing my day on a regular basis as a teenager. I was in a twelve-step program and one of the steps is to continually take a personal inventory, to see where you were wrong and could have done better, and also to see where you were right and did well. You can learn more about the Twelve Steps.

You can review all the different areas of your life. It helps to get it out of your head and onto paper. It sharpens your thinking and evaluation. It also helps you get more reps because reviewing an experience is almost like reliving it. This is great because reps lead to strength.

That’s one reason I think I’m so good with the erotic stuff, because I’ve written about my experiences so much.

Reflecting on your experiences is one part of personal growth. Taking time to notice what is working and what could be better can help you understand yourself more clearly.

Make Life Reviews a Regular Practice

When I started my business with a direct sales company, I began doing this on a weekly basis. Over time, I expanded the practice. Now I review my life monthly, quarterly, and yearly.

It helps so much to review what was good and what could have been better. It also helps to plan ahead, to set goals and intentions, even though that one is harder for me. As I open and heal my heart, it is becoming easier, and for that I am deeply grateful.

One way to make reflection more useful is to write down what you’re noticing. You might find that mindfulness practice helps you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and habitual patterns.

Start Reviewing Your Own Life

You don’t have to wait until the end of the year to reflect on your life. Start with your day or week. Write down what went well, what could have been better, and what you learned from the experience.

Use what you discover to help you make choices about what you want to do differently and what you want to continue doing. Over time, these reviews can help you recognize patterns, appreciate your progress, and make more intentional choices.

You can also apply this practice to your relationships. For example, reflecting on how you spend time together can help you consider what matters most and how you might prioritize making time for intimacy.
