How to Bring More Presence and Pleasure Into Everyday Life
It feels so good to be getting back into my rhythms and routines here at home after several weeks of traveling!
I’ve been focusing on being present in everyday life, and it’s making such a difference.
A Simple Practice for Finding Presence
One thing that is really helping me right now, so I wanted to share it with you in case it can help you too, is practicing being in the present moment.
One book that I use, which is a classic, is How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie. Even though it was written in 1948, I find the principles to be practical and applicable today. I highly recommend it if you are feeling stuck, depressed, or having a hard time getting sh!t done.
Living in Airtight Compartments
One of the ideas he discusses is the practice of living your life in air-tight compartments. On a submarine, there are airtight compartments that, if sealed, prevent water from entering.
If we break our day and activities down into distinct compartments, where we don’t let regrets from the past or worries about the future intrude, we can be fully present in the moment. We can turn our full energy toward whatever it is we want to focus on. We can relax and be present in the moment.
Putting Presence Into Practice
Today I am practicing that with my email system. Earlier this year, I had to switch to a new platform. I encountered several obstacles while setting it up. I finally got it set up, but I still haven’t sent out an email. Some of what has been holding me back has been the feelings I’ve had about it (frustration, overwhelm, etc.).
So for today’s practice, I will set a timer (so I remember to move and stretch in case I do get in flow). I will put out of my mind all the past obstacles and future concerns, and take it one step at a time until either I get it done or run out of time to work on it.
What do you think about this strategy? Is it something you do, or would like to do? Do you think you could use this technique for more presence and pleasure in your intimate life?
If you would like to incorporate this type of practice in your life (or in your bed) and are finding it challenging, feel free to reach out for some support. I offer a 30-minute complimentary phone call for support and to explore if we might be a good fit to work together.
